New Commando Trust Veterans’ Scholarship program launched with $120,000 funding from Lockheed Martin Australia.

Lockheed Martin Australia, the Commando Welfare Trust and Wandering Warriors have come together to assist Australian Special Operations veterans transition into the civilian workforce with a new skills and mentoring program.
The Commando Trust Veterans’ Scholarship program, which offers six scholarships of $5,000 a year and will run for four years, was kickstarted with a $120,000 support package from Lockheed Martin Australia.
The program will provide Special Operations veterans with skills additional training that will make them job-ready, and includes both educational and mentoring components.
Recipients will be able to select a training package that suits them from series of complete or partial certified programs across leadership, management and work health and safety programs.
Lockheed Martin Australia executives have also committed to provide additional training and mentorship to the veterans to round out their educational qualifications.
Joe North, chief executive of Lockheed Martin Australia, outlined how proud the company is to partner with Australia’s veteran community.
“Lockheed Martin Australia is committed to supporting and improving the lives of those, and the families of those, who have served and sacrificed for our country,” North said.
“The Commando Trust Veterans’ Scholarship program recognises Special Operations veterans possess many attributes and transferable skills such as leadership qualities and project management skills that, once harnessed through training and mentoring, can lead to career opportunities in the civilian sector.
“Our continued investment into veteran support initiatives such as the Commando Trust Veterans’ Scholarship program has helped create opportunities for Australian servicepeople and their families to enjoy a better future.”
Chairman of the Commando Welfare Trust Brigadier (Ret'd) Mark Smethurst DSC, AM, articulated how the program will support the transition of Australia’s Special Operations veterans into civilian life.
“As the trust’s inaugural corporate partner, Lockheed Martin Australia demonstrated a genuine commitment to creating a practical scholarship program focused specifically on the needs of Special Operations veterans looking to transition to the civilian workforce,” he said.
“Lockheed Martin Australia’s capabilities and advanced technologies support and protect our servicepeople in the field, so we are proud to partner with them in delivering the Commando Trust Veterans’ Scholarship program and give Special Operations veterans the best opportunity to be successful in their chosen civilian career.”
