Recent updates to geo-positioning systems could provide vital improvements to the capabilities of autonomous vehicles, Thales Australia has suggested.

Thales Alenia Space has confirmed that the company will be looking to improve geo-positioning technologies for autonomous vehicles on the road, sea and rail by combining several existing sensing systems, in tandem with the European Space Based Augmentation System (SBAS). It is hoped that these upgrades will support the growth in positioning capabilities to meet the minimum Safety of Life integrity level.
Thales Alenia Space is a joint venture between Thales and Leonardo, holding 67 per cent and 33 per cent, respectively.
According to a statement, Thales Australia outlined that the improvements to the autonomous sensing would support primary industries in Australia, including mining, transport, maritime and rail.
The announcement from Thales Australia comes following the recent agreement between Thales Australia and Lockheed Martin Australia to support Australia’s sovereign military industry.
“High-performance propellants and explosives for warheads, solid fuel rocket motor manufacturing and associated R&D and support services delivered by Thales Australia are essential to achieve sovereign guided weapons capability, and we are looking forward to working with Lockheed Martin in support of the Australian Defence Force’s objectives,” Jenkins said.
