The university has committed to facilitating research initiatives in support of the nuclear submarine agreement.

The University of Adelaide has pledged to maximise research and education opportunities linked to the new AUKUS alliance between Australia, the UK and the US, which will see nuclear powered submarines built in South Australia as part of a knowledge sharing arrangement.
Professor Anton Middelberg, deputy vice-chancellor, research at the University of Adelaide, said the institution would contribute to the future skills and research needs of the state’s defence community.
“We will use our long history of engagement with the defence sector to be a driving force at the centre of the research and education opportunities that this new partnership presents,” Professor Middelberg said.
“… World-class defence research is being undertaken at the University of Adelaide in fields including artificial intelligence, quantum and cyber technologies, and critical minerals.
“We have an opportunity to work with Australian industries to improve their competitiveness, productivity and sustainability when dealing with radiation-related issues, by providing expertise in areas such as radiation sensor technologies.”
The University of Adelaide currently offers courses on nuclear technology, including the design, construction and testing of nuclear-powered submarines, and the handling of intermediate-level waste storage facilities.
“We will investigate opportunities to tailor existing undergraduate courses and develop new graduate courses that support a workforce ready to contribute to defence industry,” Professor Middelberg added.
The university is also expected to bolster existing degrees with new international collaborations, including the Master of Marine Engineering, supported by ASC.
New micro-credential courses for continuing professional development are also set to be offered, supporting the upskilling of the existing workforce.
“With nine STEM disciplines already ranked as top 50, the University of Adelaide is respected globally and is uniquely positioned to help lead research with AUKUS partners in industry and academia,” Professor Middelberg said.
