Rheinmetall has unveiled Maske 81mm — a new version of its smoke/obscurant grenade, based on a bimodular, bi-spectral ammunition concept.
The new variant deploys a decoy module, designed to generate intense blooming by leveraging next-generation technologies.
Maske 81mm also includes a concealment module with a visible and infrared smoke/obscurant that can interrupt the enemy’s line of sight in both the visual and infrared spectrum.
The new capability is expected to provide armoured vehicles with effective protection from visual and infrared optical aiming devices as well as target sensor heads, laser target illuminators and laser rangefinders.
The Maske 81mm is built to be launched from any 81mm calibre smoke grenade dispenser, including legacy launchers.
According to Rheinmetall, the Maske 81mm would be particularly suited for defence forces deploying heavy fighting vehicles equipped with smoke grenade launchers formerly made by Warsaw Pact.
This latest announcement comes just days after American Rheinmetall Systems announced a multimillion-dollar investment in its strategic plan to support US Army combat vehicle modernisation priorities with advanced combat vehicle mission systems technologies.
The company plans to bolster its workforce across advanced engineering segments while also enhancing industrial capability to develop and deliver supporting technologies.
The investment aims to deliver next-generation situational awareness and fire control systems capability to the market, leveraging existing turret technologies in production for several Allied nations.
American Rheinmetall Systems is expected to position itself to support Rheinmetall affiliate American Rheinmetall Vehicles, currently performing in Phase 2 of the Army’s OMFV program, designed to find a replacement for the Bradley infantry fighting vehicle.
