University of Southern Queensland granted DISP membership

The University of Southern Queensland gained membership into the federal government program, providing a “boon” to the university’s hypersonic, rocket fuel, machine vision, astrophysics and advanced materials research.

The University of Southern Queensland gained membership into the federal government program, providing a “boon” to the university’s hypersonic, rocket fuel, machine vision, astrophysics and advanced materials research.

Professor Peter Schubel, executive director of the University of Southern Queensland’s Institute for Advanced Engineering and Space Sciences, hopes that acceptance into the program will facilitate greater engagement between the organisation and the defence industry ecosystem.

“DISP membership will promote greater collaboration between the University and defence entities in research programs, as well as facilitate greater cooperation with private industry within Australia and allied nations,” Professor Schubel said.

“We possess forward-thinking research capabilities that are attractive to the defence industry, including composites manufacturing, astronomical observatories, artificial intelligence and more.”

According to a university spokesperson, acceptance into the Defence Industry Security Program (DISP) is a “boon” for their defence related research, including into hypersonics, rocket fuel, machine vision, astrophysics and advanced materials.

Acceptance into the Department of Defence’s DISP is designed to enable non-defence organisations to better engage with Defence by providing frameworks on how to operate with defence capabilities.

“We are also home to world-class infrastructure and equipment, including the Mount Kent Astronomical Observatory, a long duration hypersonic wind tunnel and a rocket laboratory, as well as one of Australia’s largest dedicated composite materials manufacturing and testing facilities,” Professor Schubel continued.

“Obtaining this membership is an important milestone in our development as a key research institution that is helping to boost Australia’s sovereign defence capability.”

Professor Schubel explained that the university’s acceptance into the program reflects their “holistic” approach to security and their dedication to protecting Australia.
