Under the program, Assistant Minister for Defence Andrew Hastie announced that the federal government has committed support to 20 projects across the country, estimated to create 1,000 new jobs and generate a 40 per cent increase in Australia’s diesel fuel reserves.
The projects include a $25 million investment in strategic storage capabilities in Western Australia’s Kwinana.
“Diesel is vital to Australia’s energy security – it keeps our economy running, and it underpins our critical infrastructure, trucking sector and key industries, such as mining and agriculture,” Hastie said.
“This $25 million investment from the Morrison government is enabling a local, family run business here in Kwinana, Coogee Chemicals, to build the infrastructure to store 100 megalitres of diesel – that is not only great for their business but great for our national security and manufacturing sovereignty.
“We live in an uncertain world, and the Morrison government will continue to take the decisions to keep Australians safe, and secure our national sovereignty now and into the future.”
According to Defence, the Boosting Australia’s Diesel Storage Program forms part of the Commonwealth’s comprehensive fuel security package, developed to bolster Australia’s fuel reserves.
