The Australian Army, in concert with the Defence Innovation Hub, has earmarked $20 million in contracts for local industry and research organisations to support the development of logistical uncrewed aerial systems for high-risk supply and casualty evacuation missions.

The solutions are to be submitted via the Defence Innovation Hub under a two-stage procurement process, which will see up to 25 respondents selected to demonstrate their proposals under the Army Innovation Day 2022 in August.
From here, it has been confirmed that the most cutting-edge solutions would be selected for contract discussions with Defence.
Since 2014, the Army Innovation Day has sought to provide defence SMEs with the opportunity to collaborate with Army and better understand their requirements.
Both Australian and New Zealand organisations are able to apply for the innovation scheme. Defence has confirmed that submissions are scheduled to close on 5 May 2022.
Earlier in April, a new tranche of defence innovation contracts were awarded to 10 SMEs across the country.
Minister for Defence Industry Melissa Price has announced the award of $23 million in contracts to 10 Australian businesses via the Defence Innovation Hub.
The contracts aim to support the development of new capability for the Australian Defence Force, while also contributing to the growth of the sovereign defence industry.
Victoria-based A.W. Bell Machinery Pty Ltd secured the largest contract, winning $5.8 million to develop a high-grade titanium casting system for in-service aircraft that could enhance Air Force capabilities.
NSW-based Jenkins Engineering Defence Systems Pty Ltd also secured $5.6 million to continue the development of a cost-effective maritime radar electronic support system.
This could provide automated warnings on the detection of potential threat signals from platforms operating in the same area as the host vessel.
