The pair has announced the formation of the Joint Institute as part of the University of Technology Sydney, supporting research and work opportunities for UTS students alongside Navantia Australia.

To achieve this, the Joint Institute is expected to provide internships, PhD and graduate employment to students at UTS. It is expected that it will develop cutting-edge R&D and sovereign intellectual property for Navantia Australia while working as a hub to build relationships between Defence and Navantia Australia’s SME ecosystem.
The institute is expected to be located at the UTS Ultimo campus which is in the middle of Sydney’s Tech Central.
Navantia Australia has confirmed that the institute will initially be funded via the company’s R&D budget, with the institute expecting future funding to be achieved via commercial project and research grants.
It is scheduled to be led by a salaried director.
“We are excited to be partnering with UTS. The alignment with core pillars of both UTS and Navantia Australia strategy means that there is a natural synergy for both organisations,” Israel Lozano, managing director of Navantia Australia said.
“The research and development focus of the institute will bring together UTS and Navantia Australia’s research expertise, as well as engineering and IT solutions development capability, to provide an innovative approach that will deliver impact for Australia.”
Vice-chancellor of UTS, Professor Andrew Parfitt, explained that the partnership provides the opportunity for the researchers to help build sovereign capability.
“UTS prides itself on our ability to engage with industry and generate real world solutions to commercial problems. Our partnership with Navantia is a fantastic opportunity for our students and academics to engage with a major maritime engineering company in the heart of our campus and contribute to Australia’s sovereign capability in the maritime sector.”
