The company has been contracted to provide a Bypass Voice Communication System for use within the Civil Military Air Traffic Management System.

According to the company, the Civil Military Air Traffic Management System (CMATS) is designed as a unified system under the OneSKY program, a partnership between Airservices Australia and the Australian Department of Defence and has been billed as the “most complex” changes to air traffic management in the nation’s aviation history.
It is scheduled to replace the existing independent civil and military air traffic management system.
Frequentis outlined that their Bypass Voice Communication System (BVCS) for use within the CMATS will be independent from the primary Voice Communication System (VCS) – adding redundancies for Australia’s air traffic management capabilities.
“Airservices is transforming how air traffic management is delivered in Australia through the OneSKY program. The program will enable a number of capabilities to airspace users, including business continuity, shared use airspace, trajectory-based operations and route optimisation,” Jason Harfield, chief executive officer of Airservices Australia, said.
“A key milestone for OneSKY is the voice communication solution, which is provided by Frequentis. The BVCS will further enhance reliability and resilience, providing a backup capability to more than 200 operator positions for our en route and terminal area operations.”
Frequentis replaced the legacy systems at Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney with VOIP-based VCS capabilities in 2019 and will provide the Royal Australian Air Force with their primary VCS and Airfield Management System.
The new independent IT-based solution possesses distinct software, hardware and interfaces from the primacy VCS.
The company explained that the BVCS systems are based on Frequentis’ VCS X10, built at their Brisance Integration Facility.
“We are delighted to be supporting Airservices Australia to streamline air traffic services to support their airspace demands, as well as well as enhancing shared situational awareness for both civil and military aviation, improving business continuity,” Martin Rampl, managing director, Frequentis Australiasia, said.
“The BVCS will allow Airservices to use the full CMATS capability and flexibility enabled by an IT VCS solution that supports the key objectives of CMATS, as well as resolving any potential obsolescence and support issues.”
The agreement was signed at the company’s Vienna headquarters, attended by Harfield, CEO of Airservices Australia, alongside Hannu Juurakko, Frequentis vice president - ATM Civil and chairman of the ATM executive board with Rampl, managing director, Frequentis Australasia.
