Defence manufacturing firm AME Systems is the latest firm to join the consortium’s push to build sovereign guided weapons capability.

The Australian Missile Corporation (AMC) has announced the signing of a collaboration agreement with AME Systems a Victoria-based company specialising in the manufacture of customised electrical parts for defence space.

AME Systems, established in 1977, supports over 400 employees based in Ararat, Melbourne.

The company, which has set up three factories in Malaysia, has supported major global defence and aerospace projects, partnering with the likes of Northrop Grumman, Boeing and Bombardier.

AME Systems’ electrical harnesses and assemblies have also been leveraged by Boeing Australia in support of the manufacture of the Royal Australian Air Force’s (RAAF) MQ-28A Ghost Bat.

The company is expected to support AMCs work on the Commonwealth government’s sovereign Guided Weapons and Explosive Ordnance (GWEO) program.

In April, the government appointed Raytheon Australia and Lockheed Martin Australia as strategic partners for the $1 billion GWEO.

The global prime contractors will be supported by a number of Australia-based industry cooperatives, including the NIOA-led AMC, and the Sovereign Missile Alliance (SMA) – a joint venture between Nova Systems and Electro Optic Systems (EOS).

The enterprise ecosystem aims to support Defence’s inventory of guided weapons and explosive ordnance, while also including:

  • manufacturing;
  • R&D;
  • education and training;
  • test and evaluation;
  • maintenance and repair;
  • storage and distribution; and
  • disposal.

AMC CEO Lee Goddard welcomed the firm to the consortium.

“AME Systems is a proud Australian company which has invested heavily in staff capability and the latest technology to deliver solutions for a range of industries including defence and aerospace,” he said.

“They are a prime example of the incredible innovative spirit and unwavering commitment to creating highly skilled local jobs that exists within the Australian defence industry.

“We look forward to teaming with them and our other partners to support Australia’s guided weapons and explosive ordnance enterprise.”

Nick Carthew, AME Systems managing director, added: “Our team has been working very diligently to make our mark in the defence arena and I’m very proud to be able to support this national endeavour from regional Victoria,” Carthew said.
