The first round of findings from the inaugural Defence Connect Australian Defence Industry Report, conducted by Defence Connect’s research arm, Momentum Intelligence, has been unveiled today, detailing the nation’s top 20 defence contractors by engagement.

Conducted between the 21st of September and the 11th of November 2022, Defence Connect’s inaugural Australian Defence Industry Report captures insights into the experiences, attitudes, and perceptions of Australia’s defence industry professionals and their work with prime contractors.
The core attributes that were assessed included invoice settlement, collaboration, communication and project management, global supply chain opportunities, knowledge transfer and transparency.
Today, Defence Connect has unveiled the first findings of the report.
The findings, which detail the footprint of the nation’s largest defence contractors, rank the contractors by the proportion of survey respondents who have engaged with them over the past five years.
Based on the results of the survey, BAE Systems Australia and Thales Australia have the greatest footprint in Australia’s defence industry with 56 per cent and 51 per cent of respondents having worked with them over the past five years, respectively.
The top 20 defence contractors are as follows:

- Boeing Defence Australia – 37 per cent
- Lockheed Martin Australia – 35 per cent
- Raytheon Technologies – 34 per cent
- Rheinmetall Defence Australia – 25 per cent
- Northrop Grumman Australia – 24 per cent
- Babcock Australasia – 23 per cent
- L3Harris Technologies – 23 per cent
- SAAB Australia – 22 per cent
- Nova Systems – 22 per cent
- ASC – 22 per cent
- Airbus Australia Pacific – 19 per cent
- Navantia – 18 per cent
- Leidos Australia – 17 per cent
- QinetiQ Australia – 16 per cent
- Austal Limited – 15 per cent
- KBR (Kellogg Brown & Root) – 15 per cent
- EOS Australia – 15 per cent
- Hanwha Defense Australia – 15 per cent
Defence Connect editor Liam Garman explained that the findings, which will continue to be released over coming weeks, provide critical insights into Australia’s defence industry.
“The Defence Connect Australian Defence Industry Report is being released at a pivotal time for the ADF, the Commonwealth, and the region,” Garman said.
“The report details essential industry insights, and has been designed to help build a stronger, more agile and innovative Australian defence industry.
“Defence Connect hopes these findings will contribute to a better informed defence community and will help build a safer Australia.”
The survey used a sample of 870 active defence industry participants to deliver a margin of error of +/–3.32 per cent.
Of those, 57 per cent of responses came from small-to-medium sized businesses operating within the defence industry, with 19 per cent of respondents from businesses with 1 to 10 employees.
