Elbit Systems scores Royal Navy subcontract

The multinational defence contractor has been selected by Babcock International to support its electronic warfare project for the Royal Navy.

Babcock International Group has awarded a £73 million ($134 million) contract to Elbit Systems UK, which has been tasked with supporting the delivery of new electronic warfare (EW) capabilities to the Royal Navy under Increment 1 of the Maritime Electronic Warfare System Integrated Capability (MEWSIC) program.

Specifically, the 13-year contract, which includes the provision of in-service support, involves the design, manufacture and delivery of maritime EW suites with fully digital full-spectrum Radar Electronic Support Measures (RESM) and EW Command and Control (EWC2) systems.

These technologies are tipped to enhance the situational awareness and anti-ship missile defence of front-line platforms, while also improving capability to exploit the electromagnetic environment.

“We are proud to be in position to provide such an important capability to the Royal Navy,” Martin Fausset, CEO of Elbit Systems UK, said.

“Elbit Systems UK will work with its local partners on developing and delivering these cutting-edge technologies, creating high skilled jobs while providing operational sovereignty and freedom of action.”

This latest contract comes just days after Elbit Systems UK was selected to deliver the Interim Combined Arms Virtual Simulation (Deployable) ICAVS(D) solution to the British Army — a pathfinder project under the Collective Training Transformation Programme (CTTP).

The new solution, which is expected to replace the Unit-Based Virtual Trainer (UBVT) by 1 April 2022, is tipped to exceed the UBVT in scale, size and complexity.

ICAVS(D) leverages high specification hardware, using Defence Virtual Simulation software to deliver immersive virtual training.

This is aimed at helping inform the requirements for the future replacement of the UK’s Command and Staff Training (CAST) and the Combined Arms Tactical Trainer (CATT) systems.

ICAVS(D) is also expected to support experimentation and collective readiness training, from vehicle crew to Combined Arms Sub-Unit.

The platform enables users to train in complex operational environments across a range of conditions, and can be deployed within barracks and on training areas.
