RAAF launches inaugural Amberley Open Day

Amberley Open Day

The Australian Defence Force will open the gates of RAAF Base Amberley to the public for the first time since 2008 this October as part of its 2022 Ipswich Amberley Air Tattoo.

The Australian Defence Force will open the gates of RAAF Base Amberley to the public for the first time since 2008 this October as part of its 2022 Ipswich Amberley Air Tattoo.

The Air Tattoo, run in partnership with the Ipswich City Council, will take place on Saturday, 29 October and Sunday, 30 October, Defence has announced.

The event will involve flypasts over the base throughout the weekend, organised by the Royal Australian Air Force, as well as static aircraft displays on the ground.

Other items, including military equipment from across the ADF, will also be on display throughout the weekend.

Tickets for the event will be released for purchase later this year, however, non-ticket holders will still be able to catch a glimpse of the aerial displays at one of the multiple designated viewing hubs in Ipswich, Springfield, and Rosewood, free of charge.

Air Commodore Micka Gray, head of air shows, said RAAF Base Amberley has a long association with the City of Ipswich.

“RAAF Base Amberley has been an integral part of the Ipswich community for more than 80 years, first commencing operations in 1940 during World War II.

“We are very proud to be working with the Ipswich City Council to host the Air Tattoo later this year. The Air Tattoo gives people a rare insight into the base, the people, and military capabilities that call Amberley home.

“It is also a great opportunity for Defence to thank the community for their support of RAAF Base Amberley and the members who serve there.”
