Personnel from the Army battalion have put their sharpshooting capability to the test.

Soldiers from 6th Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment (6 RAR) have been taking part in phase two of basic sniper training at Greenbank Training Area over the past month, testing shooting accuracy across a range of distances and scenarios.
The training activities, overseen by exacting instructors, included stress-based scenarios, which aimed to improving decision-making skills in pressure situations.
Sniper team leader Lance Corporal Reece Tomlinson said some of the trainees “exceeded expectations” during the exercises, which typically have a low pass rate.
“The soldiers are taught how to detect and identify targets that most people might miss. Snipers are required to be meticulous with their ability to analyse the battlefield,” LCPL Tomlinson said.
“We had a great panel of students and they all worked at a high level and achieved above the required standard.”
Private Aaron Whale said sniper training fulfilled a lifelong ambition.
“It was an excellent course. It was definitely a different learning environment to anything I’ve experienced in the Army before,” PTE Whale said.
“There were a lot of opportunities to improve my soldier skills and it was a great experience.”
6 RAR’s sniper training was among a number of recently conducted Army exercises aimed at strengthening land and amphibious combat capability.
Earlier this month, soldiers from the 5th Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment, completed small boat training activities as part of Exercise Tiger’s Run in Darwin.
The activities included boat handling and beach landing operations, aimed at developing 1st Brigade’s littoral manoeuvre capability.
Exercise Tiger’s Run is the forerunner to 1st Brigade’s Exercise Predator’s Run 2022 — a combined exercise held in the Northern Territory’s Mount Bundey Training Area.
Exercise Predator’s Run 2022 is expected to involve personnel from the United States Marine Corps’ Marine Force Detachment – Darwin, Malaysian Armed Forces, and the Philippine Army.
