The two companies have each selected Rolls-Royce Solutions UK to deliver the British Army’s Boxer Armoured vehicle’s MTU engine.

With a 600kw power output, the MTU 8v 199 TSI engine is 70KW more powerful than MTU engines used in previous Boxers.
As part of the agreement, the Rolls-Royce West Sussex facility will produce 523 units of the engine for use within the Mechanised Infantry Vehicle (MIV) program with WFEL and RBSL as part of the Boxer Joint Procurement Team.
Following production of the engines, Rolls-Royce is expected to deliver the engines to David Brown Santalasalo where they will be integrated into the Boxer powerpack assemblies before delivery to WFEL. For RBSL, on the other hand, assembly and testing for the transmission, engine and cooling will take place at their Telford site.
The delivery of engines is scheduled to take place later in the year.
Integration of the systems into the Boxer will take place at RBSL and WFEL’s individual sites.
“Boxer vehicle hull production is now well under way here at WFEL in Stockport. As we move into the vehicle assembly phase, we are delighted to contract with Rolls-Royce for the supply of MTU engines,” Andrew Munt, Boxer program director for WFEL, said.
Colin McClean, managing director for RBSL, welcomed the addition of Rolls-Royce to the Boxer team.
“RBSL is delighted to have secured further UK content for the Boxer program together with long-term support for such a critical part. The powerful MTU engine will be the heart of the British Army’s new Boxer vehicle. Rolls-Royce are a welcome addition to the team.”
In March, WFEL commenced a 10-year long partnership with Nasmyth Group for the production of machined and fabricated components for the British Army’s Boxer MIV program.
The Boxer mechanised infantry vehicle is a mobile and wheeled armoured combat vehicle, designed to undertake multi-terrain deployments amid a range of tasks such as infantry transportation and moving mobile medical facilities.

The Boxer MIV program is valued at £2.3 billion, designed to provide some 500 MIV units to the British military.
