The contract is valued at $9.6 million.
According to Leonardo DRS, the capability allows ABV crews to gain an enhanced situational awareness while remaining under the protection of armour, using uncooled thermal technology incorporated into a small two-axis stabilised gimbal alongside the company’s enhanced situational awareness camera.
The product is mature, with 220 systems having been delivered to the US military since 2007.
“We are very excited to provide our Australian allies with this advanced thermal sighting technology that allows users to be protected inside an armoured vehicle while giving them visual situational awareness outside during combat missions,” Jerry Hathaway, senior vice president and general manager of the DRS Electro-Optical and Infrared Systems (EOIS) business unit, said.
“With this delivery, we are bringing 15 years of experience building ABV IVS systems for the US Army to our Australian allies.”
The company specialises in cooled and uncooled thermal detectors, as well as small gimbals ranging between three to eight inches for use onboard autonomous vehicles.
