The binoculars are a multispectral surveillance device, which under LAND 159 Tranche 1 have been selected to enhance the Australian Defence Force’s sniper surveillance, accuracy and performance.

The kit is also slated to improve targeting accuracy against moving targets by performing calculations on the moving object.

The binoculars and battery weigh less than two kilograms.

“Safran Electronics & Defense Australasia is very pleased to supply JIM Compact binoculars to the Australian Defence Force,” Patrice Provost, Safran Electronics & Defense Australasia chief executive officer, said.

“We are grateful for the confidence shown by NIOA for this selection after a competitive tender process and look forward to continuing to work closely with NIOA and the Australian Defence Force.”

In October, Safran Electronics & Defense Australasia was selected to support Hanwha Defense Australia’s (HDA) delivery of AS9 Huntsman self-propelled howitzer and AS10 armoured ammunition resupply vehicles to the Australian Army under the $900 million–$1.3 billion LAND 8116 contract.

As part of a $5 million subcontract, France-based Safran has been tasked with supplying 32 MINEO Direct Fire Support Systems (DFSS).

“Hanwha has worked with Safran in many markets internationally and now we can add Australia to the list, further growing the strong relationship between the two companies,” Richard Cho, managing director of HDA, said.
