The Norwegian MOD will acquire 1,000 Black Hornet personal reconnaissance systems, spare parts, maintenance, and training for Ukrainian operators and instructors from manufacturer Teledyne FLIR Defense.
The pocket-sized, 33-gram almost-silent UAV is used for live and thermal video surveillance operations and artillery spotting devices in highly contested and GPS-denied environments.
Dr JihFen Lei, Teledyne FLIR Defense general manager and executive vice-president, said the company is honoured and proud to support Norway’s efforts to assist forces in Ukraine.
“The Black Hornet has proven to be game-changing technology that can help soldiers perform missions more safely and effectively,” Dr Lei said.
The new order follows nearly 300 Black Hornet systems donated to Ukraine forces through the UK-led International Fund for Ukraine in August last year, as well as Black Hornet drones supplied by the British government.
“Ukraine is very satisfied with previous Norwegian deliveries of this type of reconnaissance drone,” said Norwegian Defence Minister Bjørn Arild Gram.
Teledyne FLIR Defense has delivered more than 14,000 Black Hornet PRS systems to military and security forces in over 40 countries, including US Army orders worth more than $140 million placed over the past five years for the Soldier Borne Sensor program.
