Milrem unveils ‘defence-breaching’ Type-X robotic vehicle

A new and armed Type-X robotic combat vehicle has been unveiled by Estonian robotic vehicle manufacturer Milrem Robotics ahead of the Defence and Industry Equipment International 2023 expo in London.

The mixed reality situational awareness system RCV has been designed to support mechanised infantry units to breach defensive positions by increasing stand-off distance, raise troop survivability, and lower lethality risks.

The 12,000-kilogram Type-X is fitted with a diesel-electric drive providing an on road max speed of 80km/h and can be armed with an autocannon between 25mm to 50mm or alternative variant with a multi-canister launcher for loitering munitions.

The Type-X on show is equipped with a Kongsberg “Protector” medium calibre turret, Vegvisir Remote MRSAS with 360-degree virtual dome with electro optic and infrared sensors, as well as a tactical tethered unmanned aerial system for intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance.

Milrem Robotics chief executive officer Kuldar Väärsi said the Type-X RCV is the first of its kind equipped, with a mixed reality situational awareness system, to be presented at the show which runs from 12 to 15 September.

“Milrem Robotics continues the development of the Type-X RCV by integrating cutting-edge technologies to address the requirements of many countries interested in intelligent robotic systems, especially the Nordics and Western Europe, but also the US,” he said.

Type-X is reportedly able to navigate the battlefield autonomously with a human-in-the-loop control system and artificial intelligence, as well as having the capability for remote-controlled operations at higher speed using an indirect drive feature.

Earlier this year, United Arab Emirates state-owned conglomeration EDGE Group acquired a majority stake in the Estonian robotics vehicle manufacturer.
