The 7.62x54mm semi-automatic sniper rifle, reminiscent of the iconic Dragunov SVD sniper rifle, completed testing earlier this month on 6 October according to Kalashnikov, a subsidiary of the state-owned defence corporation Rostec.
The Chukavin has been touted to use improved ergonomics and the ability to mount sighting systems of Russian and foreign production origin. The weapon is expected to replace the Dragunov marksman rifle which has been a staple of Russian military service since the 1960s.
Kalashnikov Concern JSC president Alan Lushnikov said the rifle is a new generation of weapons that fully meets all customer requirements.
“It can be equipped with all modern types of equipment: silencers, laser designators, thermal, night and infrared sights,” he said.
Based on the testing results, the rifle will be put into serial production in the weapons production division, he said.
