The company secured approval from Indian authorities for 100 per cent foreign direct investment for manufacturing the shoulder launched Carl-Gustaf weapon system in India, according to a public statement announced earlier this month on 9 November.
The establishment of a new manufacturing facility in India is envisioned to produce the latest generation of Carl-Gustaf shoulder-launched weapons, as well as partnering with Indian sub-suppliers under the Indian government’s “Make in India” domestic manufacturing policy.
The seven-kilogram, one-metre-long Carl-Gustaf M4 recoilless rifle is man-portable and features anti-armour, anti-structure, and anti-personnel munitions directed by open sights, red dot sight or telescopic sights.
The multi-role weapon system allows dismounted soldiers to neutralise armoured tanks and enemy troops in defilade, clear obstacles, and engage enemies in buildings. The system also features multi-role fuses with an impact mode to destroy soft-skinned vehicles and other semi-hardened targets, or an airburst mode to allow neutralisation of infantry in the open or in open trenches.
“It is a great honour to be trusted as a global defence company to receive approval for 100 per cent foreign direct investment in India,” according to Saab’s business area dynamics head, Görgen Johansson.
“This underlines our strong commitment to Make in India and our excellent collaboration with the Indian Defence Forces.”
Saab’s Carl-Gustaf system has been in service with the Indian Army since 1976 and is established as the main shoulder launched weapon in the Indian Armed Forces.
Earlier this year in July, Saab received an order from the Australian Department of Defence for the supply of additional Carl-Gustaf M4 weapons for delivery in 2024 and 2025.
“This order continues Saab’s longstanding relationship with the Australian Defence Force. We are proud to deliver modern and user-focused weapon systems that ensures the Australian armed forces’ ability to meet a wide range of challenges on the battlefield,” said Johansson.
Proven to deliver results on the battlefield, Carl-Gustaf provides the effectiveness soldiers need with a wide range of ammunition types for Carl-Gustaf for the flexibility to handle any situation, whether it is to destroy an armoured vehicle or structure, or illuminating the battlefield during night operations, Johansson said.
For critical missions where every second counts, Saab’s Fire Control Device (FCD) 558 has soldiers covered. No range knobs and built-in ballistics data for all Carl-Gustaf ammunition allow rapid reloading and adjustment, and improved sensors for temperature and air pressure, along with optical and night capability, give ground forces the advantage in every scenario.
