Israeli defence technology company Rafael has announced the successful testing of its newest “all in one” configuration of the advanced SPYDER air defence system.

Israeli defence technology company Rafael has announced the successful testing of its newest “all in one” configuration of the advanced SPYDER air defence system.

The advanced SPYDER air defence system was reportedly able to achieve a direct and effective hit while intercepting an unmanned aerial vehicle in a challenging operational scenario conducted by Rafael with the Israeli Ministry of Defense - Directorate of Defense Research & Development.

The system, used operationally by several international military forces, is utilised as an air defence solution using Rafael-manufactured interceptor missiles against airborne threats, missiles, unmanned aerial vehicles, aircraft, helicopters and tactical ballistic missiles.

The new all in one configuration features integrated radar, electro-optical launcher, advanced control and command system, PYTHON and Derby missile interceptors mounted on a single platform for point defence and area defence with minimal operator involvement.

“Rafael is a global expert and a leading developer of air defence systems that have proven themselves in combat against a myriad of advanced threats and at various ranges,” according to Brigadier General (Res.) Pini Yungman, Rafael executive vice-president and head of the air defence division.

“Among the leading systems currently in operational use in Israel and worldwide are Iron Dome, SPYDER, and David’s Sling.

“The success of the current test with the SPYDER All in One system represents another technological breakthrough that Rafael pioneered, providing solutions tailored to different evolving threats in various arenas.

“The success of the test is a significant milestone in developing the system against different threats and demonstrates the system’s outstanding effectiveness in intercepting challenging ground-launched threats.

“As a significant contributor to national security, Rafael will continue to develop advanced air defence solutions that incorporate the latest technology for the IDF and its customers worldwide.”

A number of SPYDER Air Defence System configurations are in operational use internationally with the Czech Republic signing a procurement agreement with Rafael for the system in 2020.

“The SPYDER systems defend large areas against a wide spectrum of threats,” according to a statement from Rafael.

“System components and interceptors can be flexibly combined, affording different configurations with various ranges and capabilities. All the SPYDER systems have multiple target engagement capability for dealing with saturation attacks.

“The SPYDER systems incorporate the most advanced air-to-air-missiles with proven performance: the PYTHON-5 dual waveband IIR missile, the I-Derby active radar BVR, and the I-Derby ER long-range missile. The missiles can also be used for air-to-air missions.

“The SPYDER family has autonomous capabilities, detecting threats while on the move and firing instantly after halt.

“SPYDER systems enable a 360-degree launch within seconds of the target being declared hostile and provide all-weather, multi-launch, and net-centric capabilities.

“SPYDER’s open architecture design enables the integration of external components (such as radars) and cooperation with selected local industry.”
