Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister Richard Marles and Defence Industry and Capability Delivery Minister Pat Conroy have announced a $272 million investment to provide enhanced long-range radar systems to support Army’s long-range fires capability.

The Australian government will invest an additional $272 million to bolster the local defence industry and create Australian jobs, with the procurement of up to 14 multi-mission phased array radars (MMPARs) for the Australian Army.

These radars, to be manufactured by Canberra-based CEA Technologies, will enhance the Army’s long-range fires capabilities and provide more comprehensive monitoring of potential threats, all while contributing to the integration of a more focused and capable Defence Force.

Deputy Prime Minister Marles stressed the importance of this acquisition, saying, “In line with the 2024 National Defence Strategy, today’s announcement will ensure Army’s long‑range fire capabilities are bolstered and ensure we deliver an integrated, focused force.”

This investment aligns with the key objectives outlined in the 2023 Defence Strategic Review and the 2024 National Defence Strategy, which emphasise strengthening Australia’s self-reliance and defence industry. It underscores the Albanese government’s commitment to developing a robust, locally-made defence future and is expected to sustain over 700 jobs in Canberra and across the country.

Minister Conroy highlighted the role this contract will play in supporting Australia’s defence industry, saying, “CEA Technologies is one of Defence’s most critical suppliers. These domestically manufactured radars are testament to the ingenuity and expertise in Australia’s defence industry. This investment is another example of the Albanese government’s commitment to a future made in Australia, and the defence industry is an essential part of that future.”

Meanwhile, senator for the ACT and Minister for Finance Katy Gallagher welcomed the economic impact of this contract for the people of the ACT and its surrounds, saying, “This is an important investment for Canberra’s economy and will sustain hundreds of good, local jobs. Our government is committed to building the nation’s advanced manufacturing industry – including here in the ACT – to ensure high-quality, well-paid jobs into the future.”

Once completed, the radars will be stationed at the Edinburgh Defence Precinct in South Australia, forming part of the 10th Fires Brigade. The first units are expected to be delivered by 2027, contributing to the evolving needs of Australia’s defence capabilities.
