Rheinmetall has unveiled a new compact rectangular stun grenade for military and law enforcement personnel, with the equipment now available for acquisition.
The stun grenade, dubbed the Spectac, was certified in 2020 and is compliant with the European Chemicals Directive’s REACH (Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals) classifications.
Rectangular in shape, the Spectac is held by a mobile phone-sized carrying case and weighs 350 grams with a length of 110mm by 63mm width and 20mm depth. According to a release by Rheinmetall, this rectangular design provides the user with tactical benefits since rounded grenades can roll away from intended impact sites.
The design also supports the safety of the user, with a BTV (bottom top venting) detonation.
“In order to make it even safer to handle, Rheinmetall engineers opted for a tried-and tested bottom top venting (BTV) design. This way, in the event of an inadvertent detonation, the explosive effect blows out of the top and the bottom of the grenade, reliably protecting the user’s throwing hand,” the company released in a statement.
Currently, the system has a number of variants including 170 or 180 decibel mechanisms and 0.5 and 1.5 second delays.
The release of the Spectac comes following Rheinmetall’s first delivery of Boxer CRVs to the Australian Army in early June.
“Boxer is now enabling the capabilities that allow Army to fight, survive and win on the modern, complex battlefields of today and tomorrow,” Rheinmetall Defence Australia managing director Gary Stewart said. “And Rheinmetall is simultaneously delivering early combat vehicle capability to the Australian Defence Force while creating a sovereign industrial capability in combat vehicle design and manufacture.”
