The 71-metre vessels are expected to be fitted with advanced mission systems, 3D radar, electronic warfare suite, secure communications, a main gun, surface-to-surface missile, and surface-to-air missile systems.
The BR71 MKII, a Baynunah Class variant originally unveiled at NAVDEX 2015, can conduct operations against airborne and surface targets, patrol, and conduct surveillance and law enforcement missions.
“Signing a €1 billion defence export deal represents a momentous achievement for EDGE as well as ADSB,” said EDGE platforms and systems president Khalid Al Breiki.
“This demonstrates our strategic approach and steadfast commitment to increasing national exports in line with the UAE leadership’s directive.”
ADSB chief executive officer David Massey said the company is immensely proud of the contract announcement made on 20 February.
“At ADSB, we feel a tremendous sense of pride in signing a €1 billion export deal. The BR71 MKII corvette is a highly advanced vessel capable of performing multiple missions to secure Angola’s 1,600-kilometre coastline,” he said.
“We look forward to fulfilling the Angolan Navy’s operational requirements and strengthening their naval capabilities while expanding ADSB’s avenues of growth.”
