A senior member of ASC Shipbuilding has been honoured with an award for his contribution to the Air Warfare Destroyer (AWD) project.

Scott McNally, senior technical officer at ASC Shipbuilding on the AWD project, was awarded the Engineering Australia’s Engineering Associate of the Year by the South Australian division, a win that has now qualified him for Engineering Australia’s national award, in the same category, in November.
The award recognises Scott’s strong teamwork, contribution to the well-being and safety of his colleagues, sustainable engineering practices, innovative design, construction and aesthetic values, and resourcefulness in the planning and solution of design problems, the company's LinkedIn page said.
Currently, 300 engineers are employed by ASC and ASC Shipbuilding, with the engineering capability regularly renewed through ASC’s undergraduate and graduate programs, and professional development of its workforce.
The accolade comes after former defence minister David Johnston took back his now infamous comments that he wouldn't trust ASC "to build a canoe".
Johnston told the ABC earlier this month ASC should be involved in the SEA 5000 project to construct Australia's future warships.
"The shipbuilders, the management of the yard, should be Australian," Johnston told the ABC.
"We have a world-class shipbuilder in Austal, teaming with ASC who has come out of the doldrums – it had a lot of problems when I was the minister, a lot of problems, and now it's doing world-class work.
"Why are we not getting them to participate in this? I find it very, very curious."
