US Navy awards BAE Systems US$85m contract to deliver tactical data links to fleet

The US Navy has awarded BAE Systems an US$85 million (AU$137.3 million) production contract to supply additional Network Tactical Common Data Link systems.

The US Navy has awarded BAE Systems an US$85 million (AU$137.3 million) production contract to supply additional Network Tactical Common Data Link systems.

The Network Tactical Common Data Link (NTCDL) system facilitates the real-time exchange of voice, data, imagery and full-motion video from a diverse range of sources, including air, surface, subsurface and man-portable platforms. Systems from the company’s current contract are currently being installed on US Navy aircraft carriers and will also be deployed on the new Constellation Class frigates.

Amber Dolan, director of adaptive communications and sensing at BAE Systems, stated, “We have designed and produced a faster next-generation system to meet the demands of our customers’ evolving connectivity mission requirements. BAE Systems is committed to providing the US Navy with a trusted and secure solution to transmit and receive the critical information needed to successfully accomplish its missions across the fleet.”

The NTCDL is a versatile, multi-platform solution designed to meet all US Navy Common Data Link (CDL) requirements. It is a modular and scalable system aimed at increasing link capacity and supporting the evolution of communication waveforms. The system enables multiple, simultaneous, networked operations using existing CDL equipment, as well as next-generation manned and unmanned platforms.

With NTCDL, operators can simultaneously transmit and receive real-time intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance data from various sources while exchanging command and control information across independent or separate networks. This ensures effective communication between forces, maintaining a strategic advantage.

This latest award modifies an existing BAE Systems contract, extending the program’s total performance period by an additional three years. As the original developer and manufacturer of the NTCDL system, BAE Systems possesses the engineering expertise and production capabilities necessary to meet the program’s urgent fielding timelines.

Work on the contract will be carried out at BAE Systems’ facilities in Maryland, Colorado, New Jersey and New York.
