Damen, one of the three companies being considered for the Australian government’s $3 billion Offshore Patrol Vessels (OPV) contract, is making headways globally with new vessels and new program platforms.

The international Dutch defence, shipbuilding and engineering conglomerate, who have named Western Australian engineering firm Civmec as its preferred contractor for the OPV program, recently selected Dassault Systèmes’ 3DEXPERIENCE platform for its marine and offshore industry solution experiences to digitally transform its operations.
Dassault said the 'Designed for Sea', 'Winning Bid for Sea', 'Optimised Production for Sea' and 'On Time to Sea' industry solution experiences integrate sales, marketing, design, engineering, manufacturing and services.
CIO of Damen Shipyards Aart Rupert discussed the detailed process the company took to find this solution and concluded the Dassault platform was the superior choice for Damen's customers worldwide.
"Following a thorough analysis of marketplace solutions, we selected Dassault Systèmes’ 3DEXPERIENCE platform to execute our digital strategy and add value to our business," said Rupert.
"Dassault Systèmes’ portfolio of M&O [marine and offshore] improves and supports collaboration and operational performance across Damen, to better serve Damen’s customers worldwide."
The French multinational software company said Damen, with 32 shipyards and 9,000 employees, can improve collaboration, optimise its existing products, processes and services, and accelerate the delivery of innovative and configurable products.
Dassault said marine and offshore industry trends toward sophistication and globalisation are requiring competitive shipbuilders to profitably react to market demands for customised vessels and new business models. As the complexity of its shipbuilding portfolio increases to satisfy industry trends, Damen Shipyards is digitally transforming its operations to unify collaboration across its engineering offices, shipbuilding sites and suppliers, efficiently manage its portfolio and respond to customer needs with agility.
Dassault believes the 3DEXPERIENCE platform will provide Damen Shipyards with a single digital environment that connects requirements, regulations and project planning with full traceability. The company said Damen teams can capture and reuse existing data across all business units, handle design changes with high reactivity, plan manufacturing early in the design process and collaborate with suppliers to deliver ships on time and on cost. The platform will allow Damen to more efficiently manage programs and product portfolios to support after-sales services and the launch of new products.
Vice president, marine and offshore industry at Dassault Systèmes Alain Houard said the platform will support Damen's strategic objectives.
"Competitive shipbuilders must explore new ways to leverage the advanced technologies that are defining a new era in shipbuilding and gain an edge in the industry,” Houard said.

Damen has also received another order for an additional FCS 3307 Patrol vessel, with an option of a second, from Nigeria's Homeland Integrated Offshore Services Limited.
The order comes just over a year after Homeland took delivery of the second of two FCS 3307 Patrol vessels.
The vessels, which will be supplied as a turnkey solution, will be named Guardian 3 and Guardian 4.
Damen Group is taking care of delivery and crew training, as well as the design and build. Damen’s Local Service Hub in Port Harcourt, Nigeria, will ensure that maintenance, repairs and any additional support is handled by Damen engineers.
The vessels will be used to carry out security patrols for the international oil companies working in Nigeria’s offshore oil and gas fields, as well as occasional transfers of crew and supplies.
