HMA Ships HobartParramatta, and Stuart have departed Fleet Base East in Sydney as part of the Royal Australian Navy’s 2019 Maritime East Asia Deployment.

Family and friends farewelled the first vessels and personnel to be deployed across Northern and Southern Asia for multinational exercises and regional engagement activities with regional partners.

Nine ships and over 1,000 personnel across two task group elements will eventually visit the region on deployment from the RAN.

This is the first overseas deployment for the new destroyer HMAS Hobart, which will lead the first task group element, and is the RAN’s second multiple task group activity in the region this year and also comprises HMA Ships Arunta, Sirius, Leeuwin, Ararat, Gascoyne and Diamantina as well as two submarines.

Task group ships will visit Guam, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, the Philippines and Vietnam.

Over the next several months, ships in the different task group elements will participate in Exercises Nichi Gou Trident, Haedoli Wallaby, Annualex, Pacific Vanguard, Bersama Lima, MASTEX, New Horizon, Multinational Mine Warfare and Hyuga Nada.

They will also take part in the Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Force Fleet Review, a Mine Counter Measure Symposium, South Korean International Maritime Defence Industry Exposition, as well as commemorations to mark the 75th anniversary of the Battle of Leyte Gulf and the Battle of Surigao.
