ASC celebrated International Women’s Day by touching base with their first female apprentice, who now works as an acting superintendent overseeing maintenance on the Collins Class submarine.
The former apprentice, Debbie Spence, has returned to work at ASC as a team lead after having had her second child. Spence qualified in her trade in 2007.
“I wanted to get back into a production area in a leadership role, and ASC was helpful in terms of flexible work hours, part-time hours, so that I could get back to doing what I loved – being on the shop floor, on the tools,” said Ms Spence.
Chief executive of ASC Stuart Whiley expressed the importance that workplace diversity will continue to play in the submarine industry.
