Rohde & Schwarz sign supply agreement with Gulf navy for NAVICS comms system

Rohde & Schwarz Emirates confirmed that the company has entered into a contract to deliver its NAVICS communications systems to an unspecified Gulf navy, supporting interoperability within the Gulf Cooperation Council.

Rohde & Schwarz Emirates confirmed that the company has entered into a contract to deliver its NAVICS communications systems to an unspecified Gulf navy, supporting interoperability within the Gulf Cooperation Council.

Rohde & Schwarz Emirates announced that it has entered into an agreement for the delivery of new NAVICS integrated IP-based naval communications systems to a yet unspecified partner in the Gulf, supporting continued interoperability among the Gulf Cooperation Council’s navies.

The new systems are expected to be fitted into a new series of Corvettes, with equipment also providing external line-of-sight (VHF and UHF) and beyond-line-of-sight (HF) communications capabilities.

“We are very proud to have been selected by this Gulf navy for their very important national asset,” said Ernest Joseph Yasso, vice-president for military and government solutions, Rohde & Schwarz Middle East and Africa.

“Rohde & Schwarz, a long-term partner of the Gulf navies, is working toward a common basis and interoperability within the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) by providing communications solutions, training and service level agreements. We provide invaluable support to achieve seamless communications interoperability within each state as well as across the GCC. We also make sure that we deliver a safe, future-ready investment for our naval customers on time and on budget.”

According to Rohde & Schwarz, while also enabling navies to undertake external communications, NAVICS provides multi-level security architecture paving the way for secure and tamper-proof communication in which third parties are unable to affect information.

The announcement comes as Rohde & Schwarz revealed that it had been selected alongside Thales to develop and install the R&S KORA communications and radar electronic support measure (ESM) system into Germany’s new F126 frigates as part of a mutual gain approach contract.

The contract forms part of the German Navy’s construction of four new F126 frigates. The Blohm+Voss and Thales-led project hopes to deliver their first ship in 2028.

The company explained that the system, dubbed the R&S KORA, would enable the user to intercept and analyse frequencies, thus tracking and identifying a range of broadband radar and communications transmissions.

This process is achieved by examining different signals, painting a picture of the transmission scenario and thus improving the frigate’s situational awareness and early warning capabilities.

Wolfgang Marchl, vice-president for government solutions at Rohde & Schwarz, explained that the new radar system will enable the German Navy to overcome future warfighting scenarios.

“Rohde & Schwarz welcomes the contract and has a longstanding history of providing radio communications reconnaissance systems to the German customer,” Marchl said.
