Ukraine’s strike power receives billion-dollar boost

Advanced surface-to-air missiles, HIMAR ammunition, and Javelin anti-armour weapons systems are part of a new military support package for Ukraine.

Advanced surface-to-air missiles, HIMAR ammunition, and Javelin anti-armour weapons systems are part of a new military support package for Ukraine.

The US Department of Defense (DOD) has dipped into its stocks to bolster Ukraine’s defence capability for the 18th time, announcing a new US$1 billion (AU$1.4 billion) presidential drawdown.

This represents the largest drawdown of US arms and equipment.

This latest package includes:

  • additional ammunition for High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems (HIMARS);
  • 75,000 rounds of 155mm artillery ammunition;
  • 20 120mm mortar systems and 20,000 rounds of 120mm mortar ammunition;
  • munitions for National Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile Systems (NASAMS);
  • 1,000 Javelin and hundreds of AT4 anti-armour systems;
  • 50 armoured medical treatment vehicles;
  • Claymore anti-personnel munitions;
  • C-4 explosives, demolition munitions, and demolition equipment; and
  • medical supplies, to include first-aid kits, bandages, monitors, and other equipment.

Since Russia launched its invasion of Ukraine in late February, the United States has committed US$9.8 billion (AU$14 billion) in security assistance, and a total of US$11.8 billion (AU$16.8 billion) since the Biden administration assumed office.

“To meet Ukraine’s evolving battlefield requirements, the United States will continue to work with its allies and partners to provide Ukraine with key capabilities calibrated to make a difference,” acting Pentagon press secretary Todd Breasseale said.

This latest package builds on US$550 million (AU$783.5 million) in military equipment gifted to Ukraine last week, which included:

  • 75,000 rounds of 155mm artillery ammunition; and
  • additional ammunition for High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems (HIMARS).

The US is among a host of nations, including Australia, to provide tangible military support to Ukraine since the outbreak of conflict, with many fearing Russia’s assault would spill over to other parts of Europe.

The value of Australia’s military assistance to Ukraine totals approximately $388 million, including 60 Bushmasters and 28 M113 APCs.
