The NATO nation has committed to purchasing the attack helicopters for its armed forces amid growing instability in eastern Europe.
The Polish Ministry of Defense has confirmed plans to acquire 96 Boeing-built AH-64 Apache helicopters for the Polish Army as part of its KRUK Attack Helicopter program.
The announcement followed a meeting between Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Defence Mariusz Błaszczak and US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin.
The attack helicopters would be deployed by the 18th Mechanized Division, which operates Abrams tanks.
“These helicopters work great with Abrams tanks. Together, they are enormous strength,” Deputy Prime Minister Błaszczak said.
The minister said the acquisition would form part of a broader push to strengthen Poland’s defences to deter aggression.
Apache manufacturer Boeing welcomed Poland’s decision, noting the capabilities of the platform.
“Boeing is honoured the government of Poland has selected the AH-64E Apache for the Polish Armed Forces’ new attack helicopter fleet,” the company noted.
“An Apache selection strengthens US-Polish military ties by enhancing interoperability and cooperation between Poland, the US Army and NATO nations.”
Boeing reaffirmed its commitment to working with local industry throughout the delivery process.
“During the procurement process, Boeing established significant cooperative partnerships across Polish government and industry,” the company states.
“Our partnership with the Polish Armaments Group in particular will continue to expand as we implement training and sustainment efforts with local industry.”
The announcement of the Apache acquisition comes just weeks after the Polish Armed Forces awarded a US$2.4 billion (AU$3.4 billion) contract to Hanwha Defense for the supply of K9 Thunder self-propelled howitzers (SPHs).
The deal also includes the provision of 155mm artillery ammunition, along with training and logistics support.
Deliveries are scheduled to commence this year, through to 2026, with a follow-up execution contract set to be sealed by the end of 2022.
