Ukraine's government has confirmed that it has received new air defence systems provided by its western allies.
After Russia launched intense attacks on Ukrainian cities, the country has appealed to allies for extra air defence weapons to combat waves of Russian attacks.
According to CNN, the new advanced air defence weapons have arrived in the country, which the Ukrainian government has confirmed.
In a Tweet, Oleksii Reznikov noted that “these weapons will significantly strengthen #UAarmy and will make our skies safer,” on Monday (Tuesday AEST).
“We will continue to shoot down the enemy targets attacking us.
“Thank you to our partners: Norway, Spain and the US,” Reznikov posted.
Russia dive-bombed the capital, Kyiv, with what appeared to be Iranian-made drones.
Earlier this year, the US committed to sending eight National Advanced Surface to Air Missile Systems (NASAMS) to Ukraine. In October, the White House confirmed it would expedite the delivery of two systems.
The systems are manufactured by US defence contractor Raytheon in a joint partnership with Norway's Kongsberg Defense and Aerospace, according to the Pentagon.
NASAMS provides short-to-medium range defences, and is used to protect airspace in Washington, DC and is capable of engaging Russian cruise missiles.
In recent weeks, Russian missiles and military drones targeted Ukraine's critical infrastructure with the strikes, severely damaging its electrical grid, forcing many towns and cities across the country to impose scheduled hours-long blackouts.
On Monday, Ukraine's state-energy company announced that the country would be subjected to further power cuts, both scheduled and unscheduled, due to damage from recent Russian attacks on its infrastructures.
The Ukrainian capital must ready itself, according to Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko, for further attacks on its energy infrastructure.
According to Klitschko, the Kremlin's strategy was not war, but rather “terrorism” and even “genocide.”
“Our enemies are doing everything to keep the city without heat, electricity, and water supply, and in general, they want us all to die.”
