WA government completes increased wharf capacity at Henderson

WA Minister for Defence Industry Paul Papalia CSC and WA Minister for Lands John Carey have announced the successful completion of an $8.2 million upgrade to increase the capacity of the Australian Marine Complex (AMC) in Henderson.

WA Minister for Defence Industry Paul Papalia CSC and WA Minister for Lands John Carey have announced the successful completion of an $8.2 million upgrade to increase the capacity of the Australian Marine Complex (AMC) in Henderson.

The $8.2 million deck infill upgrade project, as part of AMC2 wharf works, provides improved vehicular and crane access on the wharves to support critical marine maintenance and sustainment requirements for both commercial and Defence vessels, including Anzac Class frigates.

Combined with the adjoining recently extended AMC1 wharf, the combined length of the AMC1 and AMC2 wharves has increased to approximately 310 metres.

The wharf upgrade works at the AMC are part of a suite of state government initiatives aimed to improve efficiencies at the complex. These works are designed to support Western Australian businesses engaged with the sustainment of the Defence fleet, as well as servicing the oil and gas, resources and energy industries.

Minister Papalia said, “These upgrades improve the AMC’s capacity to service Defence vessels and reaffirms the shipyard’s position as the national centre of excellence for Anzac Class frigate sustainment.”

These comments were echoed by Minister Carey, who added, “Increasing the capacity of our decks and wharfs ensures critical projects can be undertaken in our state, providing more job opportunities and diversifying the WA economy.”

“The upgrades will assist with meeting the increasing demands of other industries vying for wharf and berthing spaces to support fabrication, vessel maintenance, and servicing at the AMC Common User Facility," Minister Carey explained.

Located in Perth’s premier industrial corridor, just 23 kilometres south of the Perth CBD, the AMC is one of only two naval shipbuilding locations in Australia and is Western Australia’s key shipbuilding and sustainment industrial precinct, supporting the manufacturing, fabrication, assembly, and maintenance requirements of the marine, defence, energy and resource industries.
