54 new Defence homes announced near Osborne

Australian Defence Force members will have greater access to housing following the announcement of 54 new Defence homes in Angle Park.

Australian Defence Force members will have greater access to housing following the announcement of 54 new Defence homes in Angle Park.

The Commonwealth hopes that the new homes, which are located 13 kilometres from the Osborne Naval Shipbuilding Precinct, will ensure ADF members can access accommodation close to their place of work.

It will cater to those working in the Submarine Construction Yard in the nuclear submarine program as well as those working in traditional naval shipbuilding.

A release from Assistant Minister for Defence Matt Thistlethwaite outlined that the houses will be modern, accessible and practical for members of Defence and their families.

The first 14 dwellings have been completed, with the federal government projecting that the next phase will be completed in mid-2025.

“I’m delighted to open the first homes within the Angle Park development, which offers modern amenities suitable for Defence families in a central location, close to the Adelaide CBD,” Assistant Minister Thistlethwaite said.

The announcement follows a round of infrastructure upgrades announced for some of Australia's largest Defence establishments.

Just two days before, Assistant Minister Thistlethwaite announced $11.2 million in critical infrastructure investments to upgrade Gallipoli Barracks in Brisbane.

As part of the $11.2 million investment, upgrades to Gallipoli Barracks include live-in accommodation refurbishments, Army-directed maintenance works, and construction of a new Joint Operations Room facility.

This will ensure that Gallipoli Barracks, which is one of Australia’s largest military bases and the headquarters of the 7th Brigade, is “fit for purpose” to support the Australian Army’s expanded mission.

Assistant Minister Thistlethwaite said, “These projects, to be delivered by local businesses, will create opportunities in the trades and construction industries and deliver increased job opportunities in Brisbane.”

Works have already begun and will create significant opportunities for local trades, construction, and other businesses, including promoting the participation of Indigenous companies.

“The Albanese government recognises that our Defence sites must be equipped to meet operational and capability requirements, now and in the future,” Assistant Minister Thistlethwaite added.

In addition to the 7th Brigade, Gallipoli Barracks is also home to elements of the 11th Brigade and also serves as the headquarters for the 1st Division and the 16th Aviation Brigade. The units based at Enoggera include armoured, artillery, engineer, signals, infantry, medical, and other combat service support units.
