The announcement was made following consultation with members of the group.
Under the broadened remit, the group will offer peer support, social work services, and advocate for family members of veterans, supporting their social and emotional wellbeing.
Renee Wilson, chief executive officer of Families of Veterans Guild, explained the name change will ensure that anyone related to a veteran can receive help.
“We know that families of veterans need support, services, a community, and a voice in the veteran system. The changing of our name will open the door to anyone connected to a veteran. For example, this could include widows, veterans’ children, partners, parents, siblings, or extended families.”
The name change was made in response to gaps in the veterans market, Wilson explained.
“Our services are complementary to those currently in existence. It takes a village to provide holistic and quality support to the families of our veterans throughout their entire life journey. It is only when we, as a community, work together that we can fill existing gaps and improve the lives of the families of our veterans.
“This change will ensure that there are no more wrong doors for defence and veteran families in Australia. It will ensure that all segments of this community, which total more than almost half a million people, have an organisation supporting their interest.”
