Ukrainian medical trainers have given Australian mixed reality technology the green light as a viable training tool for aeromedical evacuation medics.

PULSE (Prehospital-Focused Ukrainian Life Saving Effort), a tactical medicine training organisation for the Armed Forces of Ukraine, was able to test the first mixed reality BlueRoom Simulation system in Europe, according to the company.

“The PULSE team had a unique opportunity to test the first mixed reality BlueRoom Simulation system in Europe, and we sincerely thank its developers for this experience as well as for Skills Meducation for hosting us at their fantastic facility,” said an official statement from PULSE, which conducts training in tactical medicine and medical support for Ukraine.

“This innovative simulator impressed us with its high level of realism, environmental immersion, and the ability to monitor provider metrics such as heart rate, SpO2, and stress levels. Additionally, the system allows for the collection and analysis of measurable data, which is crucial for training and evaluating outcomes.

“Thanks to mixed reality technologies, participants can interact with real objects such as tourniquets, medical kits and airway management devices, seamlessly integrated into the virtual world. This creates an immersive effect without losing the sense of working with real equipment.

“From our team’s perspective, the system seems to have been primarily developed for aeromedical evacuation medics. It offers the opportunity to ‘experience’ various aeromedical platforms, from the UH-60 Black Hawk to the C-17 Globemaster. This makes perfect sense, as it eliminates the need to deploy actual aircraft for training. Additionally, there are scenarios with the Bushmaster, stabilisation points and TCCC scenarios for Care under fire or threat phase.

“We believe BlueRoom is an excellent and effective tool for professional training. At the same time, it can be used a supplementary training stage that complements traditional methods. We hope this system once will become accessible to Ukrainian military personnel, adding new opportunities to their training programs.”

The BlueRoom mixed reality simulator, created by Australian company Real Response, was previously shown to defence industry representatives before the 2024 Land Forces Expo in Melbourne during a BlueRoom Industry Day on 10 September.

“I am really proud that the first visitors to our new BlueRoom in Hilversum, Netherlands, at our partners Skills Meducation was the team from PULSE - Tactical medicine for Ukraine. These incredible medics, educators and warriors are at the forefront of defending a free Europe,” BlueRoom Simulations co-founder Benjamin Krynski said.

“Seeing them run through BlueRoom was a pertinent reminder of the importance of rapid tactical combat training capability and our simulation systems’ impact on the battlefield.”
