The defence prime has been selected to deliver enhanced mortar systems to the German military.

The German Bundeswehr has awarded a €27 million (AUD$42.3 million) contract to Rheinmetall for the supply of 120mm mortar ammunition and the modernisation of its mortar systems.

The modernisation project aims to enable the Bundeswehr’s 120mm mortars to fire new generation (NG) mortar rounds.

The project is set to involve adding obturation rings to the tubes.

Rheinmetall supplied the Bundeswehr with DM75 NG multispectral mortar rounds and DM56 NG infrared illumination mortar rounds ahead of the upgrades.

The company offers a complete range of 120mm, 81mm and 60mm ammunition families and develops mortar fire control systems and mortars like the 120mm Ragnarök mortar weapon system and the RSG60 60mm mortar.

Rheinmetall is expected to complete the modernisation project by 2023.
