The Leguan RC can be operated by an operator control module (laptop) with the aid of a hand controller. The vehicle can place a mobile bridge, which it can then drive over itself or allow other vehicles, such as tanks, to drive over.
A Krauss-Maffei Wegman (KMW) spokesperson said the successful vehicle would promote the development of similar remote-controlled vehicles for the partnership.
“(The remote-controlled vehicle) can be remotely operated from a safe distance in high-risk situations.”
“Full access to all functions of the bridge laying tank is given to the soldiers in the field from a distance.
“The successful construction of the Leguan RC prototype provides the technical basis for the remote control of other platforms, such as minesweepers or recovery vehicles.”
Estonian robotics vehicle manufacturer Milrem Robotics made headlines early this year in February when United Arab Emirates’ state-owned conglomeration, EDGE, acquired a majority stake in the company.
At that time, it was announced that Milrem Robotics would continue its current operations but also join EDGE as a new entity within its platforms and systems cluster.
EDGE Group chairman H.E. Faisal Al Bannai said both companies will continue with laser focus on the development of robotics capabilities.
“EDGE’s investment in Milrem Robotics, a company with an established reputation as a leader in the fields of robotics and autonomous systems, is also an investment in the future of EDGE,” he said.
“It will allow us to realise both companies’ objectives and ambitions with agility in an increasingly diverse and fiercely competitive marketplace, to share technology and expertise, and to provide Milrem with the necessary support to expand its resources and talent base for further international growth as part of EDGE, and to also contribute to the growth of Estonia’s sovereign defence industry.”
Milrem Robotics supervisory board chairman, retired general Riho Terras, said EDGE is a leading global defence industry group with a very wide reach and impressive resources.
“The addition of EDGE as a new majority owner will allow Milrem to increase production, hire new people, acquire new know-how and also significantly expand its product portfolio, thereby become a stronger company internationally,” he said.
“This, in turn, allows the company to significantly and more efficiently contribute to the development of Estonia’s defence capability.”
