The South Yorkshire-based company has been selected as part of a multimillion-pound deal jointly awarded by WFEL and its parent company KMW for the production of armoured steel for the British Army’s Boxer Mechanised Infantry Vehicle (MIV) program.

South Yorkshire-based MTL Advanced has been selected to provide the armoured material for the British Army’s Boxer Mechanised Infantry Vehicle (MIV) program’s hull assembly, as part of a multimillion-pound agreement to take place over coming years.

The Boxer MIV is a mobile and wheeled armoured combat vehicle, designed to undertake multi-terrain deployments amid a range of tasks such as infantry transportation and moving mobile medical facilities.

To support the program, MTL Advanced has invested over £2 million to acquire new equipment across the company’s business units in order to scale production capacity and meet the upcoming demand for armoured steel.

The new contract between MTL Advanced, WFEL and KMW has already supported the creation of 30 new jobs, following on from MTL's 12 new apprentices hired in September 2021 and four young jobseekers.

Karl Stewart, general manager of MTL Advanced, welcomed the opportunity to syncretise the company’s expertise in armour manufacturing with WFEL and KMW.

“We are really excited to have been awarded this major contract, which will give us the opportunity to work in partnership with WFEL and KMW on such an important UK Defence project. We look forward to engaging closely with WFEL and KMW’s engineering teams and leveraging our armour manufacturing expertise to help make this Boxer Vehicle programme a great success for the British Army,” Stewart said.

“As a company located at the heart of the Sheffield-Rotherham Advanced Manufacturing corridor, the region that was the cradle of the Industrial Revolution, we are immensely proud to be able to bring such a prestigious multi-year contract to Rotherham for the benefit of our local community.”

The announcement came as WFEL confirmed that it had entered into a partnership with Cwmbran-based GuS Periscopes for the delivery of periscope and window systems as part of the Boxer  program.

The periscopes and windows will be integrated into the Boxer’s chassis, which WFEL will supply to the UK’s Minister of Defence.

According to WFEL, the multimillion-pound contract between the two companies is expected to last for 10 years, with the company selected for proven, durable and quality products that minimise technical and commercial risk for the Boxer MIV program.

“We are delighted to join forces with GuS Periscopes in Wales as part of our UK-wide supply chain rollout for the MoD's Boxer Programme and look forward to a successful partnership supporting our joint UK MOD customer,” Ian Anderton, managing director of WFEL said.

GuS Periscope’s managing director Anthony Caruana explained that the recent agreement enabled the company to fulfil its objective of protecting British service personnel.

"Our proven periscopes and windows for the UK Boxer vehicles will be manufactured to unrivalled levels of quality and durability to fulfil the needs of the British Army MIV program, to ensure service personnel survive the rigours and hazards of combat and fulfil their critical missions. We are excited and proud to be supporting WFEL and to be fulfilling our purpose of 'protecting those who protect us',” Caruana said.

In order to meet the unique demands of the Boxer vehicle and their partnership with WFEL, GuS Periscope’s site has undergone a multimillion-pound investment.
