Northrop Grumman and Lockheed Martin awarded contracts for Next Generation Interceptor program.

Northrop Grumman Systems and Lockheed Martin have been confirmed as the successful applicants for two US Department of Defense contracts for the design and trial of prototypes for the Next Generation Interceptor program, valued at US$1.6 billion ($2.1 billion) throughout 2022.

Under the agreement, Northrop Grumman and Lockheed Martin will design a new prototype for the Next Generation Interceptor and undertake trials of the missile system to observe and mitigate technical risk within the missile systems.

Under Secretary of Defense for Acquisition and Sustainment Stacy Cummings welcomed the agreement.

“Today’s awards are an important step in modernizing our Missile Defense System, she said.

“NGI plays an important role in our homeland defense, and our acquisition strategy is ensuring the department maximises innovation to keep pace with rapidly advancing threats.”
