The Spanish Army has ordered 240 of iXblue’s Advans Series Inertial Navigation Systems for use onboard its 8x8 VCR Dragon.

iXblue’s Advans Series Intertial Navigation System has been selected to provide critical navigation capabilities on board the Spanish Army’s 8x8 VCR Dragon vehicle, with over 240 systems ordered by the Spanish military.
The initial order, which includes the Ursa U5 and Vega V5 models, are expected to start arriving in early 2022.
The Spanish Army’s 88x VCR Dragon system is based off of the GDELS 8x8 Piranha 5 combat wheeled vehicles, and will be integrated with the iXblue systems by GMV, using GMV's capabilities in GNSS and navigation algorithms.
According to a release from iXblue, the Ursa U5 is a cost-effective, north finding and simple to integrate inertial navigation system. Meanwhile, the Vega V5 is a higher performance system, used for both navigation and pointing scenarios.
Both systems are based upon the iXblue Fiber-Optic Gyroscope capabilities, which can operate in GNSS restricted environments.
“iXblue is honoured to have both GMV and the Spanish Army’s trust for such an important program,” Carlos Lopes, sales manager at iXblue, said.
“Our INS will provide accurate, secure, and resilient navigation and position information to the vehicles.”
The announcement came as iXblue’s Marins Series INS and Netans Data Distribution Units (DDU) were selected by the Spanish Armada for integration into the Spanish Navy's new F110 frigates.
