Romania will acquire 32 F-16 Fighting Falcon Mid-Life Update Block 10/15 fighter aircraft via a third-party transfer from Norway in a possible US$105 million foreign military sale approved by the US State Department

The Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) notified the US Congress of the possible sale of F-16 fighter aircraft, cryptographic devices, and equipment on 30 June.
The sale includes the single-engine multi-role fighter aircraft, KY-58M and KIV-78 cryptographic devices, Joint Mission Planning Systems, night vision device aviator vision systems, electronic warfare database support, flight test services, aircraft maintenance and technical support.
“The proposed sale will improve Romania’s capability to meet current and future threats by bolstering its operational readiness while enhancing air and defence capabilities with a modernised fleet,” the DSCA statement said.
“Romania has F-16s in its inventory and will have no difficulty absorbing these aircraft and equipment into its armed forces.
Lockheed Martin has been selected as the principal contractor.
The Norwegian Defence Materiel Agency (NDMA) was originally tasked with sale and disposal of the Norwegian F-16 fleet after its retirement from service in 2019.
The NDMA signed a contract with Romania for the sale of two squadrons, a total of 32 aircraft, with associated equipment and spare parts, with the first delivery to Romania planned for late 2023 and a second in 2024.
